Fly Into Los Cabos International Airport
Your best bet is to fly into Los Cabos International Airport (San Jose del Cabo), Mexico. The approximate driving time from Los Cabos to Casa Amanecer is about 70 minutes. You also have the option to fly into La Paz, but it is a three to four hour drive away.
Commercial Airlines flying into San Jose Del Cabo:
AeroCalifornia
AeroMexico
Alaska Airlines
American Airlines
America West
Continental
Mexicana
Volaris (out of Tijuana, a cheap alternative for San Diegans)
Rental Cars:
Arrange a rental car before you leave. It will be much more expensive if you arrive without a reservation. Check to be sure your rental is equipped with a spare, jack and hub lock key before driving off (it is common for these items to be missing). Also, remember when you hit the dirt road to reduce your tire pressure to somewhere around 20 pounds (don't forget to pack a tire gauge!)...the ride will be MUCH smoother.
Some of the car rental agencies in San Jose Del Cabo include:
Avis
Budget
Hertz
Driving Directions
First off, we strongly discourage visitors to drive at night. Take this into account when booking your flights and make your reservations accordingly. The road to paradise is unpaved, narrow, windy, rough, unmarked and there are cows, horses, pot holes and other random obstacles that can turn a pleasant vacation into something out of a bad B horror flick. If you will be arriving too late to make it to Casa Amanecer before dark, why not stay the night in quaint San Jose? There are several comfortable, well appointed but small hotels and B&Bs located a short drive from the airport (contact us for recommendations). Take it easy (you are on vacation!), do some sightseeing and souvenir shopping and drive out at your leisure after picking up your groceries in the morning.
Shopping
There are many options for grocery shopping in both San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. One of the quickest ways to pick up supplies is to leave the airport on the Toll Road heading to Cabo San Lucas (it costs 26 pesos or $2.60 each way). This means heading West (left hand turn) upon leaving the airport. After the toll booth (about 15 minutes from the airport), veer right to stay out of oncoming traffic and then move to the left hand lane until you reach the traffic circle. The goal is to cross over to the other side of the circle, where the store "MEGA" is located. Park out in the open for safety's sake instead of parking below ground in the shade. Another supermarket option is Soriana's, located approximately 20 minutes from the airport along Mex Highway 1. This time, turn East (right) upon departing the airport and then head south on Mex Hwy 1 towards San Jose del Cabo. Soriana's is located on the East side of the highway across from Casper's Hardware store and the police station. There are signs marking where you turn to get there, which involves passing it and then backtracking a bit. I've included a map of different places to shop and landmarks here to help you find your way. Make sure you buy ice for a cooler/cardboard box to transport perishables. Beer, wine and booze can be purchased at grocery stores. Beer can also be had at any of the Corona, Pacifico or Tecate corner stores. And finally, fill up on gas at one of the PEMEX Stations before you leave town. There are no stations where you're headed!
Getting There
Plan on about 70-100 minute drive from the turnoff in San Jose to Las Vinoramas. If coming from the airport or toll road you will drive South towards San Jose, past the large Pacifico beer bottling warehouse. Note: The PEMEX station just before the Pacifico warehouse is your last chance to top up your gas tank. You know it's time to turn East (left) off the highway when you hit a series of stutter bumps on the highway. Take care crossing the highway! Many motorists do NOT slow down despite the stutter bumps. [If you are traveling North along Hwy 1, coming from San Jose, then these stutter bumps are also your indicator of when to turn. They are North of the San Jose Viejo stop lights and South of the airport. Turn right and then proceed as follows...] Continue East along a very pot-holed road in the suburb of San Bernabe. This paved road turns North and then East again until you come to the Santa Catarina Bar and a very large arroyo (seasonal riverbed). Slow down to a crawl as you drive from the pavement to the dirt road (it's a bit of a drop) and take the first left immediately after entering the dirt section of road. This road will take you across the Santa Catarina arroyo. On the other side you will drive up the steep bank of the arroyo and merge (keep left) onto the Palo Escopteta Road. Follow this windy road for another 17 miles or so during which you will pass by the basurero (the dump), which is marked with a sign and copious amounts of garbage along the road (keep to the LEFT when you see these). You will also pass through the village of Palo Escopeta where it will seem like you are driving right in to someone's ranch, but just keep heading East, youÕre about half way here at that point. The Palo Escopeta Road ends in a "T" where it joins the Coast Road. You are almost here!
Las Vinoramas
Turn left and cross the large arroyo from which our community takes its name - you are now entering Boca de las Vinoramas (the mouth of the Vinoramas). At the top of the hill on the North side of the arroyo is the Crossroads Country Club restaurant. The entrance to Casa Amanecer is on the next rise past the restaurant and just past a partially completed house. A sign will tell you that you are HERE! Enter at the black iron gate. You are likely to be greeted by our rather noisy welcoming party of five dogs. I know it doesn't sound like it, but their chorus is saying "Welcome!"
We hope you enjoy your stay!
